James took on draining and bush felling contracts with brother David and farther David. Then came the lure of the Thames gold rush in 1867, returned to the Otau Settlement after making little money, took up land not far from the Wairoa River today known as Clevedon. This was not enough after marring a cousin who had arrived on what was intended as a short visit. James then worked for the Waikato Land Association as a contractor. Probably he had heard of plans for settlement of Tauwhare and the promise of a dairy factory. On the 21st April, 1880 James brought 350 Acres of unimproved land in Scotsman's Valley, for six hundred pounds. At the age of 38 years he began farming his land. James and his wife lived in a small shingle roofed cottage which was completely destroyed by fire  in January, 1890. It was thought that sparks from the fire had ignited the shingles.

Notes for DAVID SHAW:

Baptized January 16, 1820 in Parish of Muirkirk , Ayrshire, Scotland. Miner in Scotland.David and Janet Shaw, in the early years of their married life, left their birth- place, Muirkirk, Scotland, in the 1850's and sailed for Valparaiso. Conditions in South America proving insupportable for them, they returned to Murikirk. But, having now tasted the romance of the wider world, they contemplated emigrating to Australia, only to change their minds on learning that a ship would presently be leaving Glasgow for New Zealand. On  December 4, 1864, David and Janet Shaw left Glasgow in the sailing ship VIOLA, with their growing family of five sons and a ten-year-old daughter, Janet. They landed in Auckland on April 4th, 1865. A new settlement was being established in what was then called Wairoa South now (Clevedon)and the family settled there. David and Janet when in there sixties brought 587 Acres of land for their youngest sons Charles and Thomas in Scotman's Valley, Tauwhare. which was named "Greenburn" and decided to leave Clevedon and go to live in Scotsman's Valley Tauwhare also.

Brought with them from Scotland a large size Bible:   The Shaw Bible. Printed in Edinburgh by Sir D. Hunter Blair and J Bruce,  Printers to the King's moft Excellent Majefty --- 1805.

Notes for JANET MACINTOSH:

'Granny Shaw, as she was better known, loved Scotsman Valley, Tauwhare  as it reminded her of her beloved "Hielands' in Scotland.and it was her instigation that it become 'Scotsman's Valley.' She would think nothing of riding a horse or driving a buggy into Cambridge to attend her 'Kirk'. A little below average height, she was strong and wiry and spoke her Scotch brogue so quickly and broadly that it was difficult for the average colonial to understand her. It was probably for this reason that children usually feared her and invariably treated her with considerable respect. It was the skill of Granny Shaw in the art of buttermaking and in the manufacture of cheese with a homemade press which enabled the family to 'make do' until initial crops of wheat and oats came to harvest. The butter and cheese was taken on horseback to Te Aroha where it met a ready market. 'Granny shaw' lived to a great age, passing away in 1916 at ninety-four, leaving behind one hundred and thirty-seven descendants and a record of courage and true pioneering spirit.

Notes for JOHN SHAW:

Obituary,  Mr John Shaw.

It is with profound surprise and extreme sorrow that the residents of Huntly heard of the sudden and unexpected demise of Mr. John Shaw who passed peaceful away in the Hamilton Hospital on Tuesday morning about 11 o'clock. A few days ago he was about, looking as well and moving as energetically as he ever did, and to-day his place is vacant, a family is plunged into mourning, and a large circle of friends are the poorer because there has departed, one whose life and actions commanded the esteem and respect of all who came in contact with him.  A quiet unassuming Scotchman, Mr Shaw proved a good citizen, on indulgent father and an exemplary husband, While his general bearing, and unfailing good humor, his sincerity and honesty of purpose, together with his reputable character and forcefulness, earned for him a high place in the estimation of the Towns people. Loyal to his fellow worker, and giving of his best to his employers, he chose the right, and stuck to it with the determination so characteristic of the North Briton. By his decease, is left a blank which will he hard to fill. Born nearly 60 years ago at Muirkirk, Ayshire, Scotland, the lad, after school days were over, chose coal-mining as has occupation, and followed it in the mines near his birthplace until 1897 when he left the old country to join his brother James who had at that lived in New Zealand for some five years. Since his arrival in the Dominion the deceased has been in the employment of the Taupiri Coal Company, and was able to work regularly and constantly until Saturday last, when his condition became such that he was sent to the Waikato Hospital. The form of Bright's Disease from which he suffered became more acute, and he gradually Grew weaker and weaker until the end came on Monday. For many years an ardent member of the Presbyterian Church and devoted to the tenets of Free-masonary, his modesty kept him form seeking office, though his good, sensible advice was often sought and acted upon. Mr. Shaw leaves a widow, 2 sons and 3 daughter to mourn their loss, and to them, the sincere sympathy if freely and spontaneously extended. The funeral of Mr. Shaw which was largely attended took place on Thursday afternoon. The Burial Service was read by the Rev. Mr. Richards, while a Masonic Service was conducted by W. Bro. T. Black P.M. The arrangements for the interment were in the capable hands of Mr. McMahon, Hamilton, whose name is a synonym for all that is desirable on these sad occasions when such services are necessary.

Notes for CHARLES SHAW:

Farmer and Horse Breeder.

Charles Shaw and his brother Thomas came to live in Scotsman's Valley in 1881. The brothers farmed in partnership until Charles died in 1921. Charles did not favour dairying and this fact, plus his skill with horses meant that any surplus income from sheep farming and horse breeding went towards the development of scrub covered hills and the swampy flats. After Charles death, the property was sub-divided, Thomas the Bachelor taking the rear 241 acres. He later began dairying on it.

About 1910 Charles Shaw imported two barrels of trout ova from his native Scotland, and liberated them in a pool in the creek. However, eels would have eaten them before they became established.

Accident: April 23, 1883. Waikato Times.

An accident of a somewhat serious nature befell Mr C Shaw of Scotchman's Valley, on Thursday evening last. It appears Mr Shaw was driving home a load of oats, when on ascending a steep siding the horses shied, causing the dray to tip over, precipitating the driver, who was riding on the load, down the bank, Mr Shaw, who as considerably injured by the fall, had to be carried home. Dr Waddington was sent for to Cambridge on Friday morning, and attended the patient, and found him to be suffering from concussion of the spine and partial paralysis.
